The Ball Peen Hammer by HouseMade + Gnome Hammer Forge
The long-necked weirdo hammer from Brian House & Ryan Brueck.
This one started with Brian and Ryan messing around with what a ball peen hammer could be, and somehow this long-necked weirdo came out of it.
And it works.
The extended neck gives you plenty of clearance and puts the weight where you want it, while the 1.5 lb. head keeps it light and controllable for more precise work. The polished ball peen is made for shaping, riveting, and working tighter areas where your bigger forging hammers are simply too much hammer.
Each hammer is hand forged by Ryan in his Michigan workshop from American-made Detroit 1045 steel, then heat treated and finished by hand. The faces are hardened while the body remains softer, allowing the hammer to absorb more of the stress and shock from repeated blows.
The 12" American hickory handle is shaped by hand and flame-finished for color rather than stained or dyed. Every handle comes out a little different, which is exactly how we like it.

Why You'll Love It
It's an odd-looking hammer. That's kind of the point.
The long neck isn't there just to make it look different. It gives you clearance around the work and keeps the hammer nimble, while the lighter 1.5 lb. head makes it easy to control when you don't need three pounds of steel coming down on the workpiece.
It's a great hammer for riveting, shaping, detail work, and all those jobs where a full-size forging hammer feels like overkill.
And making the thing is almost as interesting as using it.
Ryan does nearly all of the drifting by hand, working the head from square to round through a process he's spent batch after batch refining.
"I love the ball peen. This one is absolutely fantastic to forge. Almost all of the drifting is done by hand. Going from square to round is super-fun and very technical.
I can't describe enough how much I love figuring out the process of making these efficiently and affordably; it's quickly becoming a passion project, just making these hammers."

The Details Matter
Every hammer gets two finishing touches: Ryan's GHF mark and the HouseMade skull + bolt.
They're not laser engraved or printed on. They're hot-stamped into the steel using stamps we designed and made ourselves in the HouseMade shop.
Two shops. Two makers. One strange little hammer we're super proud of.
